What is Pilates (pronounced peh-lot-ees)?

An alternative exercise method derived many years ago by the late Joseph Pilates, Pilates is a systematic exercise method that stabilizes the spine and re-patterns the neuromuscular system for free and flowing movement. The method gives a sense of deep strength and flexibility. Pilates is a unique system of full body movements that promotes coordination and awareness. This effective method strengthens the core system of the body, which results in proper alignment, balance, strength and flexibility. Instead of the body telling you how it will move you begin to tell the body how it will move. Pilates involves both the mind and body working together to create the use of breath, natural movement, greater body awareness and mindful movement. All the pieces together create a healthy body, mind and spirit.
