Text Box: Statistics show that ninety percent of our society walks around with some kind of back pain.  And then to think of how many other diseases cause other pain that our society is fighting.  Every day millions of people in our society are spending energy to fight pain that they could be spending on things that would be much more positive like family, friends, business and leisure time adventures.  Pain adds stress to our lives and keeps us from being in the present.  Any person that suffers chronic pain from disease or structural/alignment issues will attest  that PAIN can take over a persons life.  Most pain begins by the body moving out of alignment, mostly from faulty movement, then not being able to support itself in the perfect position that we are meant to function in.  After long periods of misalignment the body can no longer fight the misalignment and begins to feel pain and disease from the structural asymmetry.  

The good news is that there are many ways to combat this kind of condition and to re-pattern the neuromuscular system for optimal movement and health.  The first and foremost important thing to begin working on is becoming aware of  those places of pain.  Often times the body will get into a chronic pattern of pain so subtly that the body learns to turn the pain off.  That is why we often hear new clients report that they had no pain until they started doing Pilates or Gyrotonic®.  The pain was always there but the systems had learned to live with it and turn it off at a sub-conscious level.  Then as the systems begin the “overhaul” through neuromuscular re-patterning the pain is brought further up to the surface of consciousness.

We can take charge of our body to fight pain through both rehabilitative and preventative measures.  Pilates and Gyrotonic are great ways to begin teaching the body how to move more efficiently and to re-pattern faulty movements.  As exercises are learned through proper execution and form the body learns deep support of the musculoskeletal system to keep the bones, ligaments, muscles and even the viscera in the proper place of alignment.  The exercises will jump start and begin maintenance of proper alignment.  As instructors our staff often will see that there are still chronic faulty movement patterns that just won’t budge in the re-patterning process of exercise.  The body needs a complimentary modality of work to help the process.  There is nothing like a good series of chiropractic adjustments, a Rolfing ten session or a knowledgeable acupuncturist to coax the body in a gentle way  to stimulate alignment of an area that just doesn’t respond to the lengthening and strengthening work of exercises.  

In the work of Pilates and Gyrotonic we help the client to learn to work as deeply as possible for a core connection to support the systems but the deeper and more internal work of an adjustment, deep tissue manipulation, or centering through acupuncture  works to speed up the process of neuromuscular re-patterning.
