WHAT IS PILATES?

The Pilates method of condition was founded by Joseph Pilates as a means of “restoring one’s body to true balance.”  Pilates exercises, developed for both mat and equipment work, focus on the following principles: concentration, control, centering, fluidity, precision and breath.  The aims of participation in the method are proper body alignment and being present and aware during movement.  Joseph Pilates’ aim was to “make people more aware of themselves…to bring body and mind together into a single, dynamic, well-functioning entity.”  We attain this by focusing on the “center” or “core” wrapping around the torso between the lowest ribs and the line across the hip bones.  From this strong center we flow outward to engage the extremities.
